AMD buys World Labs
After the deal closes, do World Labs' models still run on chips AMD does not make, and does the research stay public?
The Quote

What would settle it
AMD's own filings and what World Labs ships. The words to hold are "open AI ecosystem", and openness here has a plain test: whether the spatial models keep running on hardware AMD does not sell, and whether the research stays published rather than folding into a product roadmap. The merger agreement was signed Sep 26 and reported on Form 8-K under Item 3.02 as an unregistered stock issuance, with the share count to be set from a ten-day average before closing. Read it fairly, because nothing is testable until the deal closes and a chief scientist reporting to the chief executive is a normal way to run research. What would settle it is a model released for AMD hardware alone, or a research programme that stops publishing.

- 2026-09-28 Statement Su made the open ecosystem claim in AMD's own release, and its subheading repeats it. Twenty-five days earlier NVIDIA agreed to buy Hugging Face and Jensen Huang promised the same thing about openness. Two rival chipmakers bought an AI company within a month and both said the ecosystem stays open. Receipt 12 tracks his version. Source
- 2026-09-28 Filing AMD filed a Form 8-K reporting the merger agreement, signed Sep 26, as an unregistered issuance of stock under Item 3.02. The price is about $8.2 billion, all in AMD shares, and the number of shares is not yet fixed: it will be set from the ten-day average price before closing. Source
- 2026-09-28 Statement Su posted about the deal herself later the same day, calling Fei-Fei Li a pioneer and saying the two teams will combine World Labs' work on world models with AMD's compute. Warmer than the release and no narrower: the openness claim stands where she put it, in AMD's own announcement. Source
Closes come from a market data feed and can lag a session; the date is printed next to every number. Filings come from EDGAR. Nothing on this page is advice or a recommendation to buy or sell anything. This one opened on a statement, and becomes a receipt the day a document settles it.
